The only way this move makes sense is that Enfield must know that USC, like UCLA, is going to struggle greatly in its new league. The Trojans would've quickly become a bottom tier Big 10 program, which isn't all that different from where they were in the Pac 12, but in the Big 10, it's going to be much harder to move up in the pecking order.
Make no mistake: establishing oneself as a Big 10 power is uncharted territory for the new teams joining that league. UCLA and Oregon should do okay in a few years, but Washington and USC...could be ugly.
