Imagine the NBA or the NFL with unrestricted free agency for every player every year and no salary cap. Basically, every season is a bidding war for every player.
The professionals don't think this would be good for their sports.
Now add in the extra factor that players are attending classes and many are trying to get a degree. That's a complication even the pros don't have.
I think college players should have choices and an ability to make money off their fame. I wonder how many 17-21 year old kids have any idea how to deal with a sudden influx of money that won't last more than a few years at best.
It's just that the current system is chaos, and it will get worse before it gets better.
Professional teams have a profit motive that places some kind of cap on the money. There is a point where even without the salary cap, they cannot make money.
NIL has no limits. It just depends on how much the Phil Knight and Boone Pickens types feel like parting with.
We are in such uncharted territory and on one is steering the boat.
