This misses the point. Barnhart isn’t hiring thr BYU coach, he hired a style of play. He targeted the big dogs in Wright and Hurley, then toward his personal choice in Scott drew, but couldn’t convince them.
Almost any coach can recruit to Kentucky. It’s certainly much easiest to get the horses in Lexington than to convince them to sign a pledge eschewing sex, drinking, etc at BYU.
I don’t know much about Pope, but I know I’d rather watch BYU play ball than UVA, UCLA and boring ball teams. I think I would have pivoted to Pearl or pitino, but they were probably too old. The wildcard for me was Chris beard, but I bet style of play worked against him.
