The thing we need to remember about Alford is that we essentially got screwed over by Brad Stephens. That deal for him to come from Butler was pretty close to done before Stephens backed out and went to the Celtics.
Alford was a WTF do we do now? hire after that, and DG, et al, really messed that up. Alford is a decent coach, but not the calibre we needed, nor did DG and the committee do a decent job at vetting him (see the Iowa player rape coverup issues which were a firestorm early).
Again per above tho, I do give Alford credit for repairing the recruiting dumpster fires in CA, and not letting the Addidas scandal even come close to touching us (Howland would have gone all in on it if we had kept him). And he made more Sweet 16's than Howland did after the 3 straight FF runs. Howland was flaming out in the first weekend every year after those runs.
