it's common practice at the college level for schools to hire a recruit's HS or AAU coach as part of a push to land the son. At the NBA level, the stars ARE the show and resigning one of the best players is a complicated, high stakes courtship and negotiation. Signing Ronny, as you noted, costs the Lakers very little and is a very small price to pay for getting his father to resign for one more year anyway. (Whether that makes much sense in terms of basketball, everyone can decide for themselves but in terms of ticket sales and TV coverage, seems pretty obvious that it's a very small price to pay to keep the father. A price any number of teams would have been happy to pay for the same privilege.)
