I'm sorry for your loss. At the same time, it's pretty hard to generalize the risk based on one accident. You didn't say what caused the crash, but things do happen with low-time pilots (or they do things they shouldn't, like show off) that they're not capable of handling. A lot of good piloting comes from good training and especially good decision-making.
Statistically, the safety of single-engine aircraft per passenger mile is comparable with motorcycles -- and that doesn't specifically mean motorcycles in SoCal traffic. Statistically, crashes and fatalities in small aircraft have gone WAY down since the early 2000s. Finally, many people point to "all the crashes" shown on the news. Well, airplane accidents, even those involving small planes, are still extremely rare, so when they occur they get blown up as big news stories on local TV stations.
