38% of their misses. That's definitely not a good statistic, but it's not necessarily indicative of a huge problem.
In the Kentucky game referenced in the OP, at Madison Square Garden on 12/17/22, Kentucky missed 43 shots, including 15 3-pointers, and got 21 offensive rebounds (41%). UCLA won 63-53.
That season, UCLA opponents rebounded 28.2% of their missed shots. Ken Pomeroy ranked the Bruins #171 in D1, which is pretty mediocre for what was a very good team.
The Arizona game was in Cronin's first year, at McKale on 2/8/20. Similarly, the Wildcats missed 44 shots, including 17 threes. They grabbed 16 offensive rebounds (36%). UCLA won 65-52.
Bruin opponents pulled down 25.4% of their OR opportunities that season, so UCLA had a very respectable #64 ranking that season.
In all three games, the other team missed more than 40 shots, including 15 or more threes. Limiting offensive rebounds is important, but if the Bruins can hold teams to 32% shooting or lower, the danger seems relatively small.
And of course Cronin called it out at the top of the post-game presser, so the team has probably been focusing on boxing out all week.
