i lived in Hawai'i, on O'ahu, back in 1971-72 - summer to summer. Was working there. That winter, my folks came over to visit and i wanted to take my father to a UH basketball game. My folks had season tickets in Pauley from the year it opened. UH wasn't UCLA but it had a really fun and pesky team that year.

Their center was 6'2" but he could jump out of the gym. As i said, fun team to watch.

They had a game against Florida State - big game, big chance for the Rainbow Warriors to show the country what they could do.

So the game starts and FSU gets the ball. The Hawai'i guard is on him and the ref starts the count. He manages to count to five in the time it would have taken anyone else to count to maybe three. Five second call, ball goeawai'i's ball. FSU's HC protests - a lot. iirc he draws a technical.

Next possession it's the exact same thing all over again. FSU Coach, Hugh Durham, pulls his team off the floor. There is no game. Hick venue refs - guess the guy got really wound up to work that game.

I apologized to my father but he was just laughing about it all. It was too bad - really thought he would enjoy seeing that UH team play. In 1971 and 1972 they won 47 games, lost 8. Believe John Penebacker was the center. The team is still known in Hawai'i as the Fab Five. Penebacker was the one team member who played four years for UH. He later starred in military basketball.

Maybe traprh knows about him?

Anyway, that memory comes back to me whenever we are playing in Hawai'i....
