If I were Coach Cronin

I think if I were in Cronin's position I might take a risk and shake things up a bit. Coaches, for the most part, are conservative and don't like taking risk. They like to play the odds and not against them, but the irony of all this is that competing, whether as a player of a coach, is a big risk inherent in the pursuit. One puts themselves out there for all to see, metaphorically putting everything on the line, and hope they are worthy. That's risking a lot.

Back to the matter at hand. I think if I were the coach I might give the ball to Dylan and tell him this is his team. The fortunes of this team will be in his hands. I would tell him that I wholeheartedly believe in him and his abilities as witnessed late last season. I would instruct him to be aggressive - to penetrate, look for his shot, draw the defense to him and distribute. I would tell him he's the best point/lead guard on the floor and to trust his own instincts. Cronin needs to get the best out of Dylan for his and the team's sake. Everyone knows he can do it. He already has. Now it's just a matter for him to believe it and then do it. Cronin has tried to get Dylan comfortable in the point guard role and nothing thus far has worked. Time to take a risk IMO.

The other thing I think I might do is talk to Mara and Kyle and tell them that they are now the 5's on the team. The minutes will be distributed between them and whatever inside game the Bruins are to have will be determined by them. Cronin needs an inside presence on this team and all his efforts so far toward that end have been lacking. Bilodeau is willing but I believe everyone can see that he is woefully playing out of position. Maybe I would also talk to Devin Williams and see if reconsidering the red shirt thing is appropriate. The Bruins need inside help and Devin is there and perhaps can provide that.

I think I would also move Dailey to the 3 and slide Johnson to the 2. IMO Mack is most effective coming off the bench and Clark would better serve the team as the backup point. He's steady enough and on some nights can be quite effective.

Maybe none of this will work. There certainly are obvious reasons we all can see that point to why this wouldn't work, but I would like to see Cronin try it anyway. And then again maybe, on the other hand, it would work. At the very least we would see if Dylan can somehow work his way out of this funk (which to me is still the key to this Bruins teams' fortunes) and also see what actual potential Mara and Kyle possess. With extended minutes we may be surprised.

This may force Cronin to alter his offensive and defensive schemes to accommodate this new lineup's strengths and also address their weaknesses. That could be painful, but I always think that growing and learning is good despite the growing pains that may also come with it. Perhaps it's time for Cronin to grow a bit? I'm not sure they have a lot to lose because the way things have been going lately the future doesn't look all that bright.
