Some examples. In the USC game-- 75% FT shooter (Fears) was 5-8. 68% FT shooter (Carr) was 1-4. That's 6 of their 8 misses. 80% plus FT shooters Cooper was 0 for 0, Kohler was 0 for 0 and Richardson was 3 for 4 (75%).
In the UCLA game, Fears was 1 for 2 and Carr was 2 for 2.
Their 80% plus Free throw shooters were 10-10 (100%). Kohler 2-2, Cooper 4-4 and Richardson 4-4.
Bottom line. UCLA was called for fouling MSU's higher percentage FT shooters more than USC was therefore MSU shot a higher percentage against the Bruins.
Players have to know who those high percentage ft shooters are and try not to put them at the line too often. Just like knowing who the good 3 point shooters are.
Even so, many times fouls simply happen in the heat of battle regardless of what your strategy may be and that includes some of those "phantom fouls" the officials sometimes call.
