I initially ran into a paywall but managed to find the article on the ESPN app on my phone.
I just wanted to point out that Kobe Johnson has been seriously overlooked this year—even by UCLA fans. He’s had an outstanding season for us, but unfortunately, scoring tends to dictate the narrative in articles like these. I hate to think where we’d be without him. While he may not quite be at Jaylen Clark’s level defensively, he’s been pretty darn close. And offensively, he’s really stepped up. Despite rarely having plays called for him, he’s putting up close to double figures, grabbing six rebounds, dishing out three assists, and snagging a couple of steals per game. More importantly, he’s been clutch when we’ve needed him most. I love what he brings to the team.
I’ve said this before, but in my opinion, it’s so much tougher to make an impact when you don’t get many touches. If you have the ball in your hands all game, take 20 shots, and make 10, that’s considered a great performance. But if you only get three chances and miss all of them, people write you off. The thing is, even that high-volume scorer probably missed three straight shots at some point. Context matters, and Kobe deserves more credit for what he’s contributing.
