later as a young coach. I knew going in of Howland's personal flaws and, lets call them, idiosyncrasies. How Howland's tenure at UCLA ended was predicted by those who knew him. It wasn't a surprise to me. Even with that I thought I saw a lightening and perhaps humbling in Howland's personality in his later years at UCLA after all the damage he had done was starting to showing. Perhaps he was trying to change and adapt and maybe try to right some of those wrongs he committed due to those weaknesses of personality. If that was so, perhaps more time would have proved beneficial for both Howland and UCLA. In the end it's difficult to overlook just how good a coach he was. It all, IMO, was a shame. Thoughts of "what could have been" keep running through my mind. Anyway, like I said, I'm glad Cronin is the current UCLA coach and I hope, for now, he stays.
