teams get a double bye. The remaining 232 teams play two rounds of regional games instead of their conference tourney games such that they're winnowed down to 128. Then wallah!, the broader tourney begins.

Or, if 1 seeds playing brutally overmatched teams is a concern, you could craft it such that the top 64 teams get byes until the 296 other teams are winnowed down to 64. That could be accomplished in three rounds. Then you'd have a 128 team fully engaged tourney. It's not that difficult, my friends. Indiana used to do it for decades.

And it could be accomplished in the same timeframe as the tourney is now.
