in soft shots. It also has a tendency to deaden the ball on the rim. But that not the only factor. Which side of the rim the ball hits (side, back or front or even combination backboard rim bounce). Those are all factors in which direction the ball bounces. And the distance of the shot, such as out to and beyond the three point line, the misses that actually hit and bounce off of the rim tend to take longer bounces away from the hoop (direction of the bounce depends on what part of the rim the ball hits). Rodman was great at being in the right place with great timing for many of his rebounds. And I've also read where he made a study of it as you described but I'm not certain what particular thing he was studying or analyzing.
