We know why Mara left—he explained it himself in an interview with Ben Bolch of the L.A. Times:

“I think I felt like I was playing well, practicing hard, putting in extra work, and until Wisconsin, I never really had the chance to show what I could do. Once [Cronin] gave me the opportunity, I saw—not a lot—but I saw some of what I was capable of. So those are the two reasons.”

One might not agree with his reasoning, but he laid it out pretty clearly. The article made it evident that he felt his development fell short of expectations and that he didn’t get the opportunity he thought he had earned.
