Say what you want about those guys.
Academic ranking has no bearing on Selection Committee's decision. Yes, Arizona is a safety school, but throughout the first 5 games, they have wins against No.3 Florida (neutral), No. 15 UCLA (neutral), No.4 UConn (road). They have Auburn, Alabama, San Diego State later in December. That is an extremely tough non-conference schedule. If they beat FL, UCLA, UConn away from home, they are very capable of beating the latter three.
Big Ten is harder than Big 12, so it's hard to blame Mick Cronin for scheduling bottom-dweller major-conference schools like Cal and Arizona State. Only Arizona and Gonzaga are resume builder games in UCLA's non-con schedule, and Arizona is already a loss, so they need to beat Gonzaga to have a resume non-con win.
