I’ve coached as well, so I tend to be pretty understanding of what coaches deal with—though my background was in baseball. It always drives me a little crazy when people second-guess a late pitching change or a pinch-hitting decision, because I know how much thought actually goes into those moments. Those aren’t casual choices; they’re usually made after weighing the best information you have at the time. Of course, it’s easy to question them when they don’t work out, and no one ever seems to remember the times they do.
I also felt the same way about Howland at the time—I wasn’t eager to see a change. He had just brought in what was widely considered the No. 1 or No. 2 recruiting class in the country (depending on whether you thought Kentucky’s was better), and he had just won the conference.
That said, I do see some differences in this situation. The biggest one, to me, is the issue of controlling his temper and the potential ramifications that could come with that. I’m not sure that’s something that easily changes. I guess time will tell.
