I think a better explanation is that Ed was the consensus USBWA POY (as well as the consensus Wooden Award POY) and, as such, qualifies. In other words, he was a consensus POY, not the consensus POY.
Of course, it doesn't matter. He absolutely deserved to have his number retired.
