Football seems to be moving to this, I don’t know why hoops hasn’t: make the contract with the player a 2 year contract. You want to leave after one year, it has to be bought out. You can roll it. After the first year, another (3rd) year can be negotiated. Or you can just let it expire after the second year.
And after the first year, if it’s in both party’s interest, they can each agree to waive the buyout and let them leave
