I think it's likely that the pundits picked SoCaro because
They crushed everyone's favorite to win the Natty by 14 points, in a low scoring game. They scored almost 30% more points than UConn, while we squeaked against Texas.
We've struggle with high pressure. Our toughest games were against Texas (twice), Ohio St, and Michigan. SoCaro has many more offensive weapons than Texas had.
Dawn has won multiple times, while our loss the previous year was the biggest loss in Women's FF history.
Seems much more likely that these were the considerations than basketball experts' (mis)perception of the ethnic composition of our team.
