That said, you’re right, what it really reflects is more about UCLA’s decision-making than the strength of that argument. I was wrong.
There are quite a few recent hires who weren’t big-name hires but have turned out to be excellent. By that, I don’t mean they were unproven—they had strong track records at their previous stops, just not the résumé of someone like Cronin. Iowa’s Ben McCollum and Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd are good examples, and there are definitely others.
