Point Guard vs Offensive Initiator

It seems like many people yearn for the prototypical PG of the 80s and 90s. A guy like John Stockton.

Dribble the ball up court. Dump the ball into post. Pick away, or sometimes cut through the paint.

Modern bball, starting with the triangle offense, doesn't use a traditional point guard. Every player in the triangle needs to know what each role in the court is. Anybody can initiate the offensive movement pattern. Ron harper, Michael Jordan or scottie pippen brought up the ball 90% of the time when they were in the court together.

Ball handling is a vital skill for a bball team to have. Sometimes you just have to have a guy who can advance the ball 47+ feet without getting turned over, v a great defender, in crunch time. There might be 10 games this year where Ucla is in a coin flip at the end. Maybe they'll lose 1, maybe 2, games due to poor ball handling. But other factors will decide the outcome of the rest.
