In soccer and basketball, my feeling is that you have to meet violence with violence. The ref’s main concern is the game getting out of control. If one team is throwing elbows to the head and the other isn’t, the the ref is in their comfort zone and they’ll continue to let the more physical team do what they do. If you force them to blow the whistle on you for a dangerous play, then they’ve got to blow it both ways.
