Not sure why you call him an "empty suit." He took the job during the pandemic with Under Armor breaking the contract that provided the bulk of department funds. He signed an arguably bargain basement contract with Nike/Jordan (but what leverage did he have?) that the players all seem to love.
His biggest failure (only?) is not pulling the trigger on firing Chip, and that's a BIG failure, but it's clear he never had the budget or administrative support to do so.
Nevertheless, hiring a football coach IS the most important thing any AD does.
OTOH, Dan Guerrero struck out four time and is still well respected by his peers, if not the UCLA faithful, and I bet he laughs every day all the way to the donut stand.
