and my Alabama team I would have given anything to have been at Bama's first Rose Bowl game in 1926. They took on the vaunted Washington Purple Tornado as they were known at that time. Udub was led by All American halfback George Wildcat Wilson. Udub was undefeated and won their first 3 games 223 to 0.
Four other teams had turned down the Rose Bowl invitation that year and the committee was reluctant to invite Alabama as southern football was not highly regarded. Four weeks before the game they invited the Tide.
Alabama was a huge underdog and fell behind in the first half but came roaring back to score all their points in the third quarter , 3 TD's in 7 minutes. Final score Bama 20, UW 19
The MVP was Bama receiver Johnny Mack Brown who returned to California the next year as a movie star with over 200 film credits.
A year after the game the school added the lyrics ....remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then .... to the Yea Alabama fight song.
