10-2 last year. Great season, right? But their losses were to Michigan and Penn St... by a combined score of 57-0. Still, 10-2 got them a good bowl game, against Tennessee... which they lost 35-0. Turns out, they really weren't very good at all, they just benefitted from a weak schedule.
Rutgers might be that team this year. In a conference this large, the schedule you get dealt is going to make a huge difference.
