I remember Pete Carrol's news conference announcing him as the new USC coach. I came away from that thinking that I didn't know if he could coach, but he sure could talk a good game. Turns out that skill helped promote the program and lead to great success.
Wins and losses are important, but the head coach has to be the face of the program and lead the marketing effort. Selling tickets is the number one priority from the business side and college sports is a business. Neuheisel's record was worse than Kelly's but attendance was much, much better.
