They have a salary cap so they are able to make money even when losing. The ramifications of a bad qb contract aren't that awful, because if your qb is bad you aren't going to compete anyhow, so taking a salary cap hit when you release him doesn't hurt you as bad. You stink anyhow. It's when you have a good (not great) qb and an awful RB contract. You can't buy other talent because of the salary cap hit.
Good QB's rarely come up for Free agency so you really can't buy them.
