What I'm going to say is not intended as an exercise in self-indulgence, but an attempt to explain why I come around the football and basketball boards.

My interest in UCLA began with the Bruins' 1964 National Championship team. I've always preferred basketball teams that won with strong guard play. Gail Goodrich checked that box.

trux, you're correct, I started nosing around this and the hoops forum around 1999. By doing so I gained a good friend, a UCLA undergrad (Notre Dame law), and a future general counsel and member of UCLA Board of Directors. Me? I spent 40 years in newspapers, the last 17 as sports editor of Pittsburgh's morning paper. I'm retired now, my friend is still chopping wood.

I friend and I had our first face to face when UCLA played in a Pittsburgh subregional. We got together again when I invited him to the 1994 Michigan football game in Columbus.

I recall he bought and wore in the press box a black Ohio State cap. I asked why not the traditional scarlet? "I don't wear red -- ever," he answered. I've always admired that answer.

Despite just two visits, our friendship has endured for more than 4 decades.

I guess I've stuck around this board so long because I'm still interested in learning about UCLA sports and I found many of the posters knowledgeable and -- for the most part -- welcoming. I come to these boards to learn, not to stir the pot.

I occasionally post, not because I'm under the illusion that anyone here gives a rat's a** about Ohio State but because -- like it or not -- UCLA is now a member of the Big Ten. And, I have 60 years of firsthand experience following the Big Ten.
