Riley had been a head coach in college and the NFL. He was given some credit for leaving a good roster behind for Dennis Erickson's run. Prior to Riley OSU was absolute trash.
His second time around at OSU he had a winning record over more than a decade as head coach. Had a couple of huge wins over sc when they were like #1 or #2. He was usually able to field a good QB, which proved to be an elusive task for UCLA during that same time period.
A mixed bag as a head coach but the point is that he was competent and formidable when he had some talent. Back then UCLA had no trouble bringing in talent.
