Cal AD likely had zero to do with this. ESPN made this call and it was done in ESPN's interest. ESPN's only other gameday choice might've been Clemson at Fl St. But since the Seminoles are DOA this year, that wouldn't work. Alabama at Vandy is not a contest, so no to that. Tennessee at Arkansas is eliminated by Arkansas' lack of curb appeal.

So, they took two teams as far apart geographically and philosophically as possible and made them a punchline game. Two teams with the worst TV package in CFB that ESPN could say they promoted with their biggest weekly event. It also promotes ESPN's late time slot, the fabled "after dark" window.

If you think Cal football is a dumpster fire, you're right, they are. But now look in the mirror. That is Ucla's future. Cal just got there first.
