USC's lousy defense replaced lousy players with better players and the defense improved to mediocrity.

UCLA's great defense replaced great players with worse players and the defense declined to mediocrity.

A totally expected outcome regardless of the coaching. Whoever's team improved more or declined less is debatable. Seems like a wash to me.
