I don't know chip... I've never met him.
But at his 1st press conference at the start of spring ball at tOSU, he was asked that question..."why did you leave?"
And IIRC, his points were:
1. I have a right to be happy. Too.
2. Because gundy took the ntOSU OC job, I coached the QBs directly for two weeks preparing for the Gronk Bowl. And I loved it. I had a blast. I hadn't done that in 16 years (since 2008). I realized how much I missed FRONT LINE COACHING. Even my wife said she hadn't seen me this happy in years.
3. The responsibilities of a college HC have changed dramatically in the last few years. And those new things are not why I got into coaching. They're not the things that keep me in coaching. The best part of football is football.
4. When tOSU OC and QB coach position opened, Ryan Day reached out to me regarding my interest in the position. And I agreed to take the position. I have a special relationship with Ryan. I've known him since he was a little kid. We went to the same elementary school (15 years apart), same middle school, same high school. I recruited Ryan to come play for me at u of new Hampshire. He was my starting QB. I got him into coaching. I called Dan mullen (made guy in the new Hampshire mafia) and got Ryan a job at Florida after he coached a few years with me at NH. When I went to the nfl, Ryan was my qb coach at Philly and at SF. I recommended Ryan to urban Meyer for the qb coach job at tOSU... urban knew Ryan from that grad assistant job he had at Florida. I loved Ucla's players and staff and only left because the chance to work with my surrogate son at the best football program in the country was too special to pass up
