For sake of argument, let's assume this meeting happened like mentioned. Kelly got his contract extension earlier that year. Chip Kelly, as far as I know, got what he wanted regarding how the program would run including things like added funding for players diets. Chip Kelly was responsible over his tenure about how recruiting and portal would be handled. I think Kelly kept Coach Azz. on staff, but that was his call. Unfortunately McGovern (think I have his name right) suffered his health issues and passed. Overall, this year's roster is the grand result of how Kelly wanted things to run.
While I can understand Kelly wanting more money for assistant coaches, he could have also factored that in when he negotiated his extension last year. And since Ucla couldn't pony up an additional $1 million to hang onto Lynn, Kelly clearly knows Ucla can not afford a buyout so I'm sure Kelly knows he has Ucla over a barrel while looking for a different job. It seemed to be out there, but what could Ucla really do?
Unlike the regular job market, there is a small window to hire HC's and assistant coaches, and February is WELL past that window. If Kelly said back in December, my heart's not into this anymore, I think both parties get out OK financially. It just feels like Kelly was trying to cover himself for buyout money or get someone to cover his penalty.
