First of all you would have less controversy about selecting the teams. Alabama and Miami would be easily in for example. Seed teams by ranking, not elevating conference champions.
Now while you may have four blowouts in the first round you may also get four very competitive games: 8-9, 7-10,6-11, 5-12. Based on the final rankings, you would get Ind-Boise, Tenn-SMU, Ohio St-Ala and ND-ASU.
Then in the second round you eliminate the large home field advantage by playing at neutral sites.
