I don’t hope for anything from Foster. I don’t follow recruiting anymore in the slightest. I’m also skeptical of what these rankings even mean nowadays when you essentially have to re recruit your good players every year and when you’re bringing in lots of guys with one year of eligibility left. I also think it’s clear UCLA will not be bringing in highly rated classes anytime soon. The best you could hope for is that he brings in enough talent to win 8 games and excite donors, who will then help him push us back up as a national recruiter.
If I were following recruiting I’d look at offers. Who else is after these guys we are recruiting? The 3 star category alone covers guys who will play anywhere from Michigan to UC Davis. And then there are what I think of as regional 4 stars. You might be a 4 star in CA but if you were in SEC country you’d be more like a 3 star. Obviously the 5 stars are a small group of guys that most everyone agrees are very talented, but I don’t see Foster landing any of those, probably ever.
Under Dorrell and Chip it became clear we were bringing in alarming numbers of guys who were very lightly recruited by good teams. So, if I were following recruiting under Foster I’d also look at whether he is bringing in these types of recruits, the type derided on this board as Dorrell’s “narcolepsy clinic” and “character guys”, and as Chip’s “School of Mines” and Ivy League/ Service Academy types.
