Of course Garbers had more passing yards. He threw a lot more passes. In those seven games you cited, Garbers averaged 35 throws a game. In the nine vs SEC and Ohio St, Nico averaged 27.
In fact, Nico's season YARDS PER ATTEMPT was higher than Garbers (7.8 to 7.5), his YARDS PER COMPLETION was higher (12.3 to 11.6), his PASSING EFFICIENCY RATING which takes into account all passing stats was also much higher (145.3 to 136.3) and he ran for 358 yards to Garber's 136.
Clearly, Nico was the more efficient QB in an offense that was excellent at running the ball (#11 nationally) compared to one that couldn't run it at all (#131).
Finally take into account that Nico was a RS Freshman while Garbers was a 4th year senior.
