I agree that 2 years seems like the max a kid should do a deal for, or the school for that matter. As you pointed out, elsewhere, w/ multiyear contracts, the school is on the hook whether the player pans out as expected or not. I would thing everyone would want to reevaluate at 2 years.

But, I'd also think that after one year, there will be some reconvening and renegotiating. If a player is looking better than projected, the school can up the offer to ensure the player doesn't leave after the two years - if that can be negotiated. Or, schools can tell players that they aren't in their plans (call it the Henry Steele conversation) and the school will waive the buyout if the player wants to leave.

Total speculation, but maybe there won't be much hostage holding. If a player is that good, there should be people lining up to pay a reasonable buyout. If the player is mediocre, the school may be happy to get him off the books and will let him leave w/o the buyout.

Seems like there are a lot of players now that enter the portal, never to be seen again. Maybe w/ 2 year contracts some of those players will be more hesitant to walk away from the next year's guaranteed pay checks in hopes for more?

It will be interesting to watch it all unfold.
