every week a guy on Bigsoccer posts the Whoscored (a stat site) Best 11 US-eligible team for MLS. On average, 6 of the guys played at least 2 years of college soccer.
They are not the guys that draw big transfer fees. But, they played the best soccer that week for any US-eligible player at their position in the league.
There absolutely is a path to a pro soccer career that goes through college.
I don't know why the funding of UCLA's soccer team is reliant on that, but as an aside, college players do go on to play in MLS.
Sad to see UCLA mens soccer on this downswing. UCLA used to be a massive influence on the MNT
