Elite university turns breadwinner into laughingstock

So it goes.

In time, the new business economics of CFB will force a fundamental, structural change in the football program.

Until then, Frenk will probably change ADs and Fossie Bear will get another year until the new AD makes a move. Alas, there's nothing in Frenk's background to suggest he can succeed at this. In any case, we get another exhibition season after this one.

The short term risk, the path of least resistance at Ucla is Frenk replaces Jarmond with another Jarmond. I put the odds there at somewhere around 65-35. The only reason it isn't 100 - 0 is that some informed, Ucla sympathetic football people might come to his aid and get him to a successful result. Left to his own devices it's a disaster.

Avoiding disaster means hiring a leader with a new vision, one that embraces big money in college football and is unabashed about it.

Consider, and today is a good day for this, that in one of the greatest commercial, financial, entertainment and innovation capitals in the world, with an abundance of talent and billions of advertising dollars within a nine-iron of campus, we have a California state bureaucracy with no skills at promoting itself in the nation's most popular college sport.

Enough of this sh*t show.

Someone from outside UC, outside Ucla but well within and excellently skilled in CFB, needs to come in here and begin the transformation of the Bruin football team into an attractive media property that a mega-donor will be anxious to underwrite with a large percentage of the "talent fee" that is required to win on the field now. Call it the Oregon model.

Until then, get used to more elite mediocrity with a growing probability of extinction in ten years.
