In reading the linked article, it's obvious that Malloe is trying to cover up the weaknesses we can see in some areas of the defense, IMHO the two key areas are Pass Rush and LBs.
Re: Pass Rush - it would be great if Davillier could get on the field, tho we did a bit better last week (but nowhere near where I expect a Malloe defense to be).
Re: LBs - We REALLY miss Kain and Carson so far. Chisholm seems to have found his footing, but Vaughns is still reacting WAY too slow and doens't always know where to be (I can remember Chisholm yelling and pointing at him after one play that he was WAY out of position). He is probably our most athletic LB, but his read/reacts have been so slow (because of the split time with Baseball?) that he is usually out of position and then scrambling to make up for it with athleticism. Experience will help this, as can a TON of film work, but we need him to be MUCH better at this.
I'd also think that maybe the Safeties could be better at helping out in the run/short passing game, but for now, I think it's mostly the inexperienced LB play that is really killing us, especially on 3rd downs.
Improve both of those items and we should also start forcing some turnovers
