First, even if White is a qualified candidate, the optics of selecting yet another former player (4th in the last 23 years) will be bad for the program. UCLA has so many negative storylines out there right now that we don't need another calendar year of ridicule.
Second, if because of his connection White is inclined to fit into the existing UCLA culture rather than push back on it, I think that's bad.
The test I would use is to ask a few questions:
1) Would TW be on the radar if he was not a former player? If the answer is No, then that's your answer.
2) Is Tony White likely to get a head coaching job somewhere else this year? In other words, is he wanted as a head coach by other FBS schools? If No, then again, that's your answer.
I don't hate the idea of hiring White (as I hated the idea of hiring Foster), but he should be a Plan C.
