If you want to be great at anything meaningful, you have to be part of an organizational culture that is going to enable greatness.
Not just make it possible. Make it happen.
And greatness is not possible via cheating.
That bullshiit at Michigan? That wasn't greatness. That was embarrassment. Neither was that crap at sc.
I think culture has been very under-discussed amongst fans in this interim period. The culture of the football team has to be congruent with the larger university. If the FB team culture is anti-social thuggery, that's not going to work at Ucla. That has organ rejection written all over it.
I don't know what the fb team culture was at Oregon, but I'll give chip Kelly credit because he quickly figured out that the "books & ball boy scouts" were the kind of kids that "fit" at Ucla. Yeah, there will be some 4 and 5 star kids, but the guys who really defined the culture were the kids who were kinda like Steve Rogers but who through nutrition and pumping iron turned themselves into Captain America, like Carson Schwesinger and Greg Dulcich.
The next hc at Ucla needs to figure out the team culture that is going to play at Ucla, a culture that he can convincingly sell and live every single day. And he needs to be able to implement it in a week or two so he can hit the grind running when it comes to recruiting, the TP and NIL.
