His best shot at getting a head job is to be on a successful staff in a big conference. If Chesney succeeds, you could see his young OC (Kennedy) moving on, and Jerry potentially moving up. And if successful you could see Chesney leaving and UCLA wanting to maintain some continuity with a successful program.
When that happens it comes down to the OC or DC for the head job. Jerry obviously went to UCLA and has a following among some fans. And we know UCLA has a habit of falling for former players.
Once he leaves UCLA he's just another journeyman coach.
I personally hope Jerry never comes back because there's too great a risk of UCLA falling into old habits. The only way I'd want to see Jerry back is if he becomes a successful head coach elsewhere first, and then wants to come back.
