I think there is often a clear subtext that the more pious I am, the more games we win. Winning was part of God's plan for them, and the more they praise God, the more he will bless them with success.
I personally think that is a bunch of nonsense.
But, for those who want to thank God for the air in their lungs and the opportunity to play, that's fine with me. I just don't agree that's what they all mean. I think there's a clear connection between the thanks they give and the outcome of the game.
You definitely don't see the losing side thank God as much. Like "Man, we got our butts kicked out there today, but all glory to God! He had a plan for us! And apparently, that plan was for us to lose 38-3! I just feel so blessed right now."
