They do a lot of dirty work that doesn't show up in the stats. Having good DT's that require enough enough attention that you can't automatically double team the DE on passing downs. Having someone inside who can get to the QB like Owa on a unit with someone like Bosa will likely be a win/win for both of them. If Bosa gets doubled, Owa will have more opportunities to feast, and if you don't double Bosa, he's likely to make some major impact plays. Moreover, a MLB's best friend is space taking DT that can absorb hold up blocks and give the LBs a clean path to diagnose the play and get to the ball. Kuechly played much of his career with All-pro caliber DT Kawaan Short, and also Star Lotuleilei, who was a run stopping beast. The Niners have a pretty decent MLB named Fred Warner who does best when playing behind active DTs like Osa.
