They should have been very clear: get to the corner of the endzone and step out as late as you can. Even if time is left, you get a free kick with a one-point lead. Even if he hadn't fumbled, there would have been one second left and they'd have had to kick it anyway.
Instead, per the head coach's own words, he was told to run around and burn time before going down. Six seconds is a long time to run around in that small space.
Also, the coach should have just accepted the mistake as his own instead of throwing it on the player. I can't see Chesney saying "I told Nico what to do and he c*ocked it up".
