Re-watching the 2nd half, I think he was quite good Saturday. He really only had a couple of bad plays, retreating on the sack and throwing too early to Rowe. He had some exceptional plays, the three passes he completed as well as the ball Rowe dropped in the end zone. And just as impressively, he looked comfortable playing in a hostile environment.
Nico had at least three terrible plays in one half.
I think people are thinking of TD just as some random FCS-level guy with modest stats, but what I see is a pretty talented guy who apparently was a late comer to the QB position in high school. He's big, can run very well, and it's not like he has some funky throwing motion or weenie arm. He's actually a pretty good passer.
I watched some of his stuff online and he is an athlete who throws a nice, catchable ball. He doesn't lack for confidence, and he's not some 5'11 FCS guy who can't move. Go to YouTube and check him out.
Can he do it among the speed and schemes in the B1G? I don't know, but with the cast and coaches around him, I think he has a chance. People can yearn for the comfort blanket of Nico, but the fact is that Nico was not getting it done, and at times was really f'ng us up, so I'm not sure what people think we're missing out on.
I wouldn't feel that way about Madden. I think with Madden we are in a much more difficult spot. Lacks confidence, has no real game experience throwing the ball, is still kind of slight to play at this level, and is a pretty average runner.
Maybe I'm just talking myself into this but I think I do actually believe it.
