It helped him win.
They were smart enough to not announce the ceasefire the day he won the election, or day after like in the Reagan case with Iran. They held off so that Trump could pose and say hell to pay if you don't release the hostages etc but the deal is the same deal it's been for months.
They just wanted to use it in the election, and it absolutely worked it was one of the big issues in swing states.
