My reading:

"Yeah, it is kinda regrettable that all the over-drilling we did also had a negative impact on climate change and contributed to its effects we've been seeing everywhere, but on the upside, it was a net positive for us because it helped our economy run well, at least better than Europe's."

Am I misreading your comment? Do you not see the callousness disguised as objectivity and even-handedness in that take? That word "lamentable" does plenty of heavy lifting there. It minimizes the impact and the importance of climate change by downplaying how we should feel about it, which is the kind of thing you would expect extractive industries using.

Compare with "while it's lamentable that school shootings occur, the increase in the sales guns, we've been seeing the past few decades have no doubt helped our economy".

I hope I was able to clarify the part of your comment that sounded like fingernails on chalkboard to me.
